Rediscovering Rome through Their Eyes

Day 1: Spain - Rome

Departure from Spain to Rome. In the early evening, with the city already lit up, we will take the opportunity to walk through some of its streets while learning about the origin of the city. Between history and mythology, in this introduction, the names of the first women who play a part in the stories explaining the birth of the eternal capital will appear. From the Spanish Steps, we will advance along Via del Corso until reaching the iconic Trevi Fountain, we will see from afar the imposing Altar of the Fatherland, the Pantheon of Agrippa, Piazza Navona, and will end at the Castel Sant'Angelo. Behind each of these places, there is a story about the women of the city. Remainder of the night free, to enjoy nighttime Rome or to rest and gather strength for the intense following day.

From Largo di Torre Argentina, we will begin to delve into the history of the women of Rome, but first, we will transport ourselves to the Ides of March to learn about the women of one of Rome's most important men, Julius Caesar, such as his wives, daughters, or Cleopatra herself. From there, we will go to the Theatre of Marcellus, see Tiber Island, and approach the Tarpeian Rock, to learn about the protagonist whom history suggests initiated the end of the monarchy and the beginning of the Roman Republic. From there, while overlooking the Roman Forum, the keys to women's lives in ancient Rome will be revealed. Among them, we will learn about the peculiarities of the Vestals or the slaves. From there, we will move closer to the forum to learn about the most notable women who accompanied the first consuls, such as Pompey, and uncover the role of women in marriage, motherhood, and power. We will advance to the foot of the Colosseum itself to learn how women attended to see their admired gladiators in action, but also the most representative female gladiators. We will start this day from Santa Maria Maggiore and the Basilicas of Santa Prassede and San Giovanni in Laterano to learn about the role of women in the dawn of Christianity and how their significant role was hidden in history. Along the way, we will talk about the ordination of women in the new religion that was adopted. At the Church of Santa Croce, we will explain the processes of the Holy Inquisition against women. We will walk to the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena to learn about the story of Marcela. From there, we will head towards Campo dei Fiori, a place of executions, to end at Castel Sant'Angelo and the Vatican, and discuss curiosities about heretics, the Holy Inquisition, some women close to the Vatican, and very relevant figures linked to it. Breakfast.

We cannot leave Rome without discussing the history of prostitution in the city. We will talk about the role played by the church of Santa Maria Magdalena delle Convertite and other institutions dedicated to prostituted women in the city. We will visit different spaces to uncover the intrigues of the most sought-after courtesans and their destinies.

We will end our tour with a mention of women in modern history, from Napoleon to World War II, the Italian partisans, and the suffragists.

Return to Spain.
