Lalibela: The rock-hewn churches
This small town located in the north of Ethiopia is known for its 11 rock-hewn Ethiopian Orthodox Churches declared a World Heritage Site. The most famous is that of Saint George or Biet Ghiorgis. It has sometimes been called the eighth wonder of the world! And for good reason! Visiting Lalibela is like traveling to the second Jerusalem, it is the second holy city of the country for the Orthodox Church and a pilgrimage center. It is situated at 2600 meters above sea level. Quite literally on high!
