Maramureș: Where wood carving is a true work of art
Can you imagine a place where everywhere you look you see a worship of woodcraft? That's exactly what you will discover on your trip to Maramures. In fact, its wooden churches are world-famous, especially the one at Barsana Monastery, one of the tallest in Europe! But the churches are not the only display of the inhabitants' passion for carpentry in this Romanian region. In almost every house you will see wooden gates carved and painted with folkloric images, saints, or flowers.

The surest and most fun moment of your trip to Maramures will paradoxically be the visit to the Merry Cemetery of Sapanta. In this graveyard, the tombstones are decorated with vibrant colors, caricatures of the deceased in their daily activities, and hilarious inscriptions recounting comedic aspects of their life or death. For those seeking physical activity above laughs, at the foot of Pietrosul Rodnei, one of the highest mountains in the Carpathians, is the famous Borsa ski slope. Could it be that Maramures is made from “another type of wood”?
